The trading company, Thorø Nielsen, was founded in 1945 in Herning, when Niels Kristian Thorø-Nielsen purchased a farm with an associated peat bog for the purpose of producing peat for fuel.

 

Later, the “THOR” branded briquette factory was established, mining coal from the Søby coal deposits. However, as energy demands changed and the danish agriculture underwent structural development, the company shifted its focus in 1969 from coal briquettes export to the import of fertilizers, among others.

 

This has remained the company’s primary focus ever since, with fertilizer imports serving today the Danish, Swedish and German markets. Since 1979, the company has been operated by the family’s second generation, and since 2025, the third generation has joined the family business.
